It works, but so does plastic surgery, and I think the surgery would be cheaper!

5 out of 5 stars I love this product!   March 23, 2010

I was shocked by how low this product was ranked, untill I remembered why I buy it and what its actually marketed for.

Over a year and half ago I bought this product hoping I had found a moisturizer that was proven to reduce acne scars. It also helped that it had SPF.

I felt I hit the motherload and I was right!

Whenever my skin feels irritates, I put this on and its soothed right away!

When I need sunblock, these baby works! I can actually feel the difference between the sun hitting the parts of my body that arent covered with this stuff!

This helps reduce my acne scars and any discoloration!

The only thing I wish was that the onion wasn't so strong or I could put this closer around my eyes.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff and they better not ever dicontinue it!

PS.
Be careful with the expiration

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Recommended   March 3, 2010

My doctor recommended Mederma for surgery I had just had. It seems to be working just fine. I still have more time before I see big change.
You can't beat the price. I've looked everywhere. Happy with product and the price.
Thanks, Linda

5 out of 5 stars Significantly reduces itching and irritation on and around keloid scars   December 13, 2009
QuincyAnn (Rural Midwest USA)
Mederma Cream with SPF significantly reduces itching and irritation associated with my large keloid scars. I previously had to use frequent and lavish application of hydrocortisone cream, which was only minimally effective at holding back the torment. With Mederma, typically one application in the morning and one at night is sufficient to keep most itching and irritation at bay.

Mederma does noticably soften the scar--which might explain some of the reduction in irritation. A little goes a long way, such that for me one tube of Mederma lasts as long as multiple tubes of hydrocortisone cream, making the price seem more reasonable by comparison.

1 out of 5 stars Look at the scientific data   September 4, 2009

The active ingredient in Mederma is an onion extract that has not been proven to effectively remove scars. If you do a quick search, you'll find a study suggesting that petroleum jelly is more effective in removing scars compared to Mederma. It's a waste of your money and it's really time intensive to follow the recommended regimen. Not backed by science. Do not buy this product.
[...]

Their conclusion from the abstract was:
"Petrolatum-based topical agents constitute standard therapy in the management of postoperative wounds. In this side-by-side, randomized, double-blinded, split-scar study, the onion extract gel did not improve scar cosmesis or symptomatology when compared with a petrolatum-based ointment."

In laymen's terms, Mederma is no better than petroleum for scar healing.
